Mary's Jewelry by Jean Kurtz OFS

MARY’S JEWELRY

by Jean Kurtz, OFS 1935-2000
published posthumously

I wear the most expensive jewelry made. Its cost is less than one dollar, and it hasn't been featured in Vogue Magazine yet. But it is a headline story in the Book of Life. It was purchased for me by the King of Kings and gently and lovingly handed to me by His mother. Its exquisite beauty promises peace on earth, good will among men and also personal salvation. When I wear it, I announce to everybody that I’m Mary’s. I am proud to be hers.

The Brown Scapular is a prayer. (It’s strange that one can wear a prayer.) It takes no time or effort. All Mary asks is that we wear it, and she will think of us and we of her.

Mary announced at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917, that with the rosary and the scapular, she would save the world. She told St. Simon Stock that anyone clothed in it at death would not taste eternal fire.

The first Brown Scapular that you wear must be blessed to you by a Priest. Thereafter, replacement Scapulars need no further blessing. Tiffany's never heard of anything so expensive. It was purchased by the blood of God and given to me by His Blessed Mother. All I have to do is put it on. Imagine the gentle love of Our Lady throughout the parish. Will you wear the Brown Scapular for peace and for your own salvation?

Brown Scapulars may be obtained at the little store at the back of the Church on Sundays or at the Good Book Store.  Some of my friends carry a Brown Scapular in their purses, or hide one in their clothing because of fashion. I wear my jewelry where everyone can see who I belong to. I am proud to announce that this jewelry is beyond price – that it is the pulse of life. May Mary keep you in her tender care and may our wonderful Lord bless you now and forever.

An original typed copy of the above was given to us on November 20, 2003 by Shirley Sherman, a parishioner at St. Helen Church in Vero Beach, Florida. This spiritual writing clearly shows the richness of our sister Jean's spiritual life. We thank Jean for her continued inspiration and her intercession from Heaven for the good of the Secular Franciscan Order.
