God is Love
A Reflection by Fred Schaeffer, OFS

“In Jesus we see God upon the Cross. There is nothing so incredible as this in all the world. It is easy to imagine a God who condemns. It is still easier to imagine a God who, if opposed, wipes out the opposition. No one would ever have dreamed of a God who chose the cross to obtain our salvation. Jesus said to Philip, ‘Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.’ (John 14:9). Jesus is the revelation of God, and that revelation leaves the mind of humankind staggered and amazed.” (from: “Within the Heart of Mary,” by Dom Augustine Moore, OCSO. 2001, O.L. of Holy Spirit Abbey)

On the Internet, I’ve come across the notion that it is not possible to sin no more, so why try? That’s defeatist thinking. I just don’t believe this. We ask God to help us to sin no more, and if we earnestly try to sin no more, you will have peace in your life. Sure, it takes effort, but it is possible to reduce the occasion of sin. We just have to work at it. When you reject Satan and try to sin no more, he will understand there is nothing to gain and leave you alone.

I am a professed member of the Secular Franciscan Order, an Order for lay persons who have discerned a Vocation to follow the Franciscan Rule. This profession took place almost 32 years ago, and I began writing these Reflections about 25 years ago. They are written for you, that is, all who read them.

I try to write one a week, but lately, having written so many, it is getting difficult to write about new concepts. Also, I’m 85, and getting to be very forgetful. This doesn’t help. I have other health issues, so please pray for me. Thank You, and I wish all of you and your families, a spiritual Holy Thursday, Good Friday and a Happy Easter.
