Franciscan Liturgical Calendar

A Franciscan Liturgical Calendar

Compiled by Deacon Dave & Therese Ream, OFS (July 2017)

In its more than 800 years of existence, the Franciscan Family, comprised of the three Orders founded by St. Francis of Assisi himself during his lifetime, has contributed in a major way to the sanctification of the Church and many of its individual members. The Saints and Blesseds of the three Franciscan Orders blanket the liturgical year with the various Feasts and Memorials celebrated in their honor.

As with everything else “Franciscan,” the effort to construct a comprehensive liturgical calendar was complex and fraught with the possibility of contradictory designations of names and assigned dates. Many names have different spellings; different calendars propose different dates for the same individual. Every effort was made to corroborate the information with at least two or three different websites and/or print references. It also must be acknowledged that, while every branch of the Franciscan Family observes the more significant Franciscan persons and events, each branch also has its favorites that only it tends to observe. If you find that

some of the information is incorrect, please notify Deacon Dave and Thérèse, O.F.S. so that corrections can be made. Thank you!

This Franciscan Liturgical Calendar makes use of the following abbreviations and designations:

d. = death date; (date) = when an event happened; the designation “First Order friar” makes no distinction between priests and lay brothers nor among the O.F.M. Observant, O.F.M. Capuchin or  O.F.M. Conventual branches of the First Order; the designation “Poor Clare nun” includes the Poor Ladies of San Damiano prior to Clare’s death; unless specified as a member of the diocesan clergy, all “Secular Franciscans” are understood to be members of the laity. Solemnities and Feasts common to the entire Franciscan Family are indicated in bold text; otherwise, all observances are Memorials or Optional Memorials (or Commemorations during Lent).
